ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHS

On the website you can see selected photographs from the repository of the Museum’s Visual Materials Department, which also collects film and audio recordings from Asia and Oceania made by Polish researchers, reporters, journalists, and travellers, mostly in the second half of the 20th century. The Museum began the process of digitalising the repository in 2017. Thanks to a subsidy
received from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, as part of the Digital Culture Programme we were able to digitalise over 9,000 photographs in 2020 and 2021. Among the photographs presented on the website you can see pictures from the archives of Andrzej Wawrzyniak, the Museum’s founder, including photos documenting the acquisitions that started the Museum’s collection. A major group of photographs taken across different Asian countries was gifted to the Museum by Jerzy Chociłowski, a long-standing reporter for the Kontynenty monthly. The project also involved the digitalisation of the archives of journalist and writer Monika Warneńska, including reportage photographs taken during the Vietnam war, among others, and pictures made by Janusz Polanowski in Indonesia. The Museum continues to expand its audiovisual collections. All the digitalised records, now coming up to 26,000 items, can be viewed at the Asian Library of the Asia and Pacific Museum.
